Good morning. Somewhere in India right now, a man has set two alarms, opened three browser tabs, and conscripted a cousin in Singapore, all to book one Tatkal ticket that will sell out in four seconds flat. We have sent probes to Mars. We have not solved this.
In today's newsletter: Meta hands WhatsApp's keys to CRED's Kunal Shah, a devastating fire tears through a Lucknow coaching centre, and Keir Starmer's resignation kicks off the race for Britain's next PM.

Meta Just Handed WhatsApp's Keys to CRED's Kunal Shah
Meta has tapped Kunal Shah, founder of credit-card rewards app CRED, to become WhatsApp's next global CEO, succeeding Will Cathcart after nearly seven years at the helm. The appointment comes bundled with a $900 million Meta-led investment in CRED itself, as TechCrunch reports.
The deal gives Meta roughly a 20% stake in the Bengaluru-based fintech and values it at $4.5 billion post-money. Shah will step down as CRED's chief executive while keeping his personal shareholding; Miten Sampat, who has run strategy and finance at CRED since 2020, takes over as interim CEO, per Bloomberg.
India is WhatsApp's single largest market, with more than 500 million of its 3 billion-plus global users, and Meta has spent two years trying to push the app beyond messaging into payments and commerce, exactly the turf Shah built CRED on, according to Business Standard.
This is Meta's clearest bet yet that WhatsApp's next chapter gets written in India, not California. Shah spent a decade convincing Indians that paying your credit card bill on time is a personality trait worth rewarding. Meta is betting he can pull off something similar for WhatsApp's payments and commerce ambitions.
WhatsApp's new global boss is CRED founder Kunal Shah. Meta also pumped $900 million (around ₹8,500 crore) into CRED and now owns about a fifth of it. Forward to 10 groups for luck. (Please don't.)
Most coverage led with the leadership swap. Less noticed: Shah is leaving CRED's CEO chair but keeping his equity, which means he still has skin in the game at the company Meta just invested in, even as he goes to work for the investor.

Keir Starmer Resigns, and Britain Is About to Get Its Seventh PM in a Decade
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced he is resigning as both Labour leader and prime minister, less than two years into a term that began with a landslide 2024 election win, NPR reports.
The resignation follows months of pressure from Labour MPs rattled by the party's collapse in May's local elections, where it lost more than 1,000 council seats as the right-wing Reform UK surged, according to Al Jazeera.
Former Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham is the frontrunner to replace him, with Labour's leadership timetable opening nominations on July 9 and wrapping up before Parliament's summer recess, per CNN.
