5 September 2026

Good morning. It has been a week where old, stuck things finally started moving again, from stalled paperwork to stalled markets, even as a few far-flung disputes decided this was the moment to flare back up. Here is what is worth your time today.

In today's newsletter: India's biggest exchange finally clears its path to going public, Argentina reignites a decades-old fight with Britain over the Falklands, and a small cloud company's stock market debut turns heads.

MAIN STORY

NSE clears SEBI's final hurdle for a ₹30,000 crore IPO, a decade in the making

The National Stock Exchange has finally received SEBI's approval to launch its long-delayed initial public offering, clearing a regulatory logjam that has kept India's largest bourse off its own trading floor for nearly ten years. The exchange first filed draft papers in 2016, only for the listing to be frozen by a forensic probe into the co-location scandal, in which certain brokers got preferential, millisecond-early access to NSE's market data between 2010 and 2014.

The IPO will be entirely an offer for sale of about 148.9 million shares by existing shareholders, with the price band expected around September 11, subscription opening September 15 and listing targeted for around September 25. NSE paid a cumulative ₹1,491 crore settlement to SEBI to close the co-location case, the final condition for the no-objection certificate.

The Bigger Picture

At an unlisted-market value of nearly ₹5 lakh crore, NSE's listing would make it one of India's ten most valuable companies overnight, and it turns the exchange itself into a public company answerable to shareholders and disclosure norms rather than only to its own board.

1 Thing Everyone Missed

The approval comes with governance strings attached: SEBI has asked NSE to amend its articles of association on board composition before the offering can proceed, meaning the exchange's own boardroom rules are being rewritten as the price of finally going public.

Argentina reignites the Falklands dispute, with an assist from Trump

Argentine President Javier Milei is escalating his country's dispute with Britain over the Falkland Islands, vowing tougher sanctions on companies drilling for oil near the islands and announcing new funding for a naval base in Tierra del Fuego. The target is the Sea Lion project, an offshore oilfield being developed by Britain's Rockhopper Exploration and Israel's Navitas Petroleum, roughly 220 kilometres north of the islands.

The timing is no accident. Milei's move comes days after Donald Trump suggested Washington could revisit its long-held position of staying neutral on who owns the islands, a remark Milei has seized on as validation of his closeness to the US president. With his approval ratings slipping and the economy sputtering ahead of next year's re-election bid, the Falklands are one of the few causes that unite Argentina's fractured politics.

DEEP DIVE

A cloud company's stock just doubled on debut, and it says a lot about India's IPO mood

Pune-based cloud and data-centre firm ESDS Software Solution listed at a 76 percent premium to its issue price on Thursday, opening at ₹757 on the NSE against an issue price of ₹429, and at a similar premium on the BSE. The ₹720 crore IPO was subscribed 136 times overall, with the institutional-investor portion alone oversubscribed more than 260 times.

The listing valued ESDS at roughly ₹8,873 crore, pushing its price-to-earnings multiple to around 73 times, well above what the issue price alone implied. It is the latest sign of how hungry retail and institutional money currently is for new listings, a mood the exchange operating that very market is now hoping to ride into its own IPO later this month.

AI tools go dark together. ChatGPT, Claude and Grok all suffered simultaneous outages on Thursday morning, an unusual coincidence that briefly knocked out three of the world's most-used AI assistants for millions of users at once.

Dutch gold heads home. The Netherlands' central bank has moved billions of euros of gold reserves out of the US and Canada and into London, citing "crisis preparedness" amid what it called increasing geopolitical instability.

Washington squeezes Cuba further. The US has imposed a fresh round of sanctions on Cuba, undercutting Havana's own sweeping free-market reforms as the two countries remain locked in a decades-old standoff.

Zambia's crackdown deepens. Repression of political opposition has surged in Zambia since last month's disputed election, with the main opposition leader facing treason charges and hundreds of supporters detained.

Law schools, not Bar Councils. The Supreme Court held that the Bar Council of India cannot discipline law students, ruling that authority rests only with their universities, after the BCI tried to block NALSAR's graduating batch from enrolling as advocates over a student protest.

Depositor protection wins out. In a separate case, the top court upheld the RBI's power to keep Abhyudaya Co-operative Bank's board superseded for up to five years, rejecting arguments that a six-month constitutional limit applies to the regulator's oversight of multi-state co-operative banks.
