Good morning. Markets are digesting a mixed overnight session even as crude has cooled a little, and there has been a genuine burst of activity out of the world's big AI labs this week, each trying to out-cheap the other. Diplomacy is also quietly moving on a couple of fronts that had been stuck for a while.
In today's newsletter: India's historic Asian Games cricket gold, and a full lineup of the sport, tech and world news you need before you start your day.
Sensex 74,529.08 DOWN 0.44% |
Nifty 50 23,329 DOWN 0.36% |
USD/INR 95.82 RUPEE FIRMER |
Brent Crude $99.48 DOWN 0.74% |
The Sensex and Nifty snapped a winning run as IT, FMCG and PSU bank stocks dragged on F&O expiry day, even as media, realty and metal stocks held up. The rupee firmed a touch on dollar inflows tied to the NSE IPO, while cooling crude offered some relief on the import bill.
India's women win the country's first-ever Asian Games cricket gold
India's women's cricket team thrashed Sri Lanka by 147 runs in Tuesday's final at Aichi-Nagoya to win the country's maiden Asian Games gold in the sport. Smriti Mandhana blitzed 79 off 45 balls to power India to 216 for 3, the highest total in women's T20I history at the Games, before the bowlers, led by Deepti Sharma's three wickets, skittled Sri Lanka out for just 69.
It capped a dominant campaign: India beat Japan by eight wickets in the quarter-finals and outplayed Bangladesh by 114 runs in the semi-final without dropping a match on the way to gold.
This is the payoff of years of investment in women's cricket, from central contracts to the WPL, finally showing up on the scoreboard in a global multi-sport event rather than just a bilateral series.
Sri Lanka's 69 all out came after India's 216, meaning the 147-run margin is now the widest in a women's Asian Games cricket final, and it happened without India ever being seriously tested through the knockouts.
