MAIN STORY

Monsoon ends 12% below normal as India lowers its foodgrain target

India's monsoon officially ends today 12% below normal. Uneven rain has stressed farm regions, kharif sowing has fallen and reservoirs are underfilled.

On Tuesday the government set a 2026-27 foodgrain target of 373.93 million tonnes, cut by 2.63 million tonnes over El Nino fears. That is below last year's record output.

Of that, 177.72 million tonnes should come from the rabi season, which is planted from October. Maharashtra has declared drought across large parts, and Karnataka faces similar conditions.

Rain has also hurt where it did fall. Cyclone Arnab flooded paddy fields in UP and Bihar just as the crop matured, and strong winds flattened standing crops.

What It Means For You

Expect food prices, especially dal, to stay firm through the festive season: several pulses have already turned costlier on crop worries and festive demand. Low reservoirs and dry soil also put winter crops like wheat at risk, which could keep grocery bills high into next year.

1 Thing Everyone Missed

The shortfall is already showing up in commodity markets: pulses prices are rising now, well before the lower harvest reaches mandis.

DEEP DIVE

OpenAI launches Dots agents and a cheaper GPT-6.1 Sol model

At its DevDay event on Tuesday, OpenAI unveiled always-on agents called Dots that chase a user's goals across apps on their own. They take on Meta's Muse in the enterprise market.

It also launched GPT-6.1 Sol, which it says nearly matches the flagship Astra at a lower cost. Coding tool Codex got reusable cloud environments and a security scanner.

New ChatGPT features also form an alternative to the app store. For India's IT workforce, cheaper models that write and review code are another reason to build AI skills fast.

DEEP DIVE

US 30-year bond yield hits highest level since 2002

The 30-year US Treasury yield touched 5.62% on Tuesday, its highest since June 2002. The 10-year yield hit its highest since 2007.

Fed Governor Michael Barr said rates may have to rise further as inflation stays well above target. The stronger dollar has pushed the euro to a 16-month low.

The Nifty had its worst September derivatives series in 25 years, down 6.7%, with foreign selling and rising yields cited. When US bonds pay this much, global money has less reason to back Indian stocks.
