Main Story

TCS to buy Porsche's IT consulting arm in $1.5 billion AI pact

Tata Consultancy Services has agreed to acquire Porsche's German consulting unit MHP and enter a five-year, 1.25 billion euro partnership to build artificial intelligence into the carmaker's engineering, manufacturing and customer operations. It is one of the largest AI-services contracts an Indian company has landed to date, and a marquee win for India's largest IT services firm at a moment when the sector badly needs one.

Under the deal, TCS will pay 320 million euros for MHP, a Ludwigsburg-based consultancy with roughly 4,500 employees that has advised Porsche for over three decades and will keep operating under its own brand inside the Tata fold. TCS will also stand up a dedicated AI Mobility Centre of Excellence to serve Porsche's factories, engineering teams and dealerships worldwide.

The Bigger Picture

This ranks among the biggest AI-services contracts an Indian IT company has ever signed with a global manufacturer, and it lands as TCS, Infosys and Wipro all race to reposition themselves as AI integrators rather than back-office coders. Landing marquee deals like this one is now as central to their growth story as headcount used to be.

1 Thing Everyone Missed

The AI partnership only takes effect once TCS completes the MHP purchase, which still needs regulatory clearance in Europe. Porsche, meanwhile, is offloading a three-decade-old in-house consultancy at the same time it is cutting costs elsewhere in its business, a sign of how hard even premium automakers are being squeezed by the slow EV transition.

Supreme Court orders Tarun Tejpal to surrender within two weeks

The Supreme Court rejected former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal's plea to be exempted from surrendering while his appeal against a rape conviction is heard, directing him to turn himself in within two weeks and file proof of surrender before his case can be listed.

The order follows a Bombay High Court verdict this month that convicted Tejpal and sentenced him to ten years of rigorous imprisonment in the 2013 case involving a former colleague at the magazine he once ran. A bench headed by Justice Alok Aradhe said his appeal will be heard on September 22, but only once he furnishes a surrender certificate.
